What printing methods do we have for t-shirts?

Various printing options are available to suit your needs. At wet-drop printing we try to accommodate everybody. This is why we don’t just have one printing technique, but three techniques we use when it comes to t-shirt printing.

The printing techniques include: heat transfers (which is very popular for when you just want to print lettering or a simple one color design), sublimation (this is for designs with lots of bright colors and detail, but remember we can only print on white and light fabrics with this technique. Another thing to remember is that 100% polyester shirts work the best for this technique) and screen printing (this technique can be used on white or dark color shirts. It works the best for large quantities for shirts. With this technique we can only print one colour).

T-shirt printing techniques:

We have three methods we use – heat transfer, screen printing and sublimation printing.

Heat Transfer

Heat transfer is when you cut an image with a special vinyl called poli flex. A vinyl cutter is used to cut the artwork out onto the vinyl. When the cutter has completed the cutting process, the weeding process will begin. Weeding is when you take out all the excess vinyl that you won’t need around the image and pull it off. After the weeding process was completed, the vinyl is ready to be transferred onto the t-shirt. This process is done with a machine called a press. The press will press the vinyl onto the shirt while applying heat to transfer the vinyl onto the shirt. The poli flex vinyl comes in many colours. The vinyl range from your normal white, black, pink, red, blue etc. all the way to glitters, flock, carbon and more. To see a full list of all the colours please click here or contact us to come to our premises and we can show you all the vinyl we have available for printing.

We also have a printable poli flex where we print onto the vinyl. This process takes much longer. The printable poli flex first needs to dry after it was printed on before it can be transferred onto the shirt. Poli flex works with both white and dark colour garments. Printable poli flex is great for when you have a design with lots of colour.  A lot of people are afraid of poli flex heat transfer. The reason for this is because in the olden days heat transfer was this thick plastic thing on your shirt. This is not the case anymore. Technology in this field came a long way. There will always be a texture on the shirt but it is not that thick plastic anymore. If you are unsure of how it feels. Contact us and setup an appointment to come and view samples. Screen Printing | Silk Screening

Screen Printing is also referred to as silk screening. This technique used to print t-shirts with, but it is not only to print shirts with, you can also print flyers, caps etc.

Screen printing is normally used for large quantities of prints. The reason for this is because in order to print your design, it first has to be prepared onto a screen. This means a screen has to be exposed with your artwork. To learn more on screen printing go to the screen printing page.

For every color you want to print, there has to be a screen. So for example, it your design consists out of 3 colors, then 3 screen will have to be prepared before the production on your shirts can begin. We at wet-drop printing, can only screen print one colour. If you want anything more than one colour, we will have to do heat transfer for you.

To learn more about this technique view our screen printing page.

Sublimation Printing

Sublimation printing is when a picture is printed onto a special paper using special ink. The paper is placed onto the shirt and pressed down with a press at a certain temperature. When the ink comes into contact with heat it turns into a gas and is then transferred into the shirt. The great thing about sublimation printing is that it will never come out (this is if its printed onto 100% polyester fabric).

We did a test once to see if bleach can remove it and it didn’t. If you want a method for t-shirt printing that is sure not to come off, then sublimation is the way to go. Just keep in mind, sublimation only works on 100% polyester white or very light garments.  We can only do sublimation printing up to an A4 size. To learn more about sublimation, click here.

Please feel free to give us a shout if you have more questions about our methods.
